Term 3 Week 9
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES AT SEHS
The last few weeks have been a good reminder of how education can occur in a range of contexts. Students at our school have had the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities – to follow their passions, move out of their comfort zones and connect with students from other schools.
Students have had the opportunity to represent Salisbury East High School at Maths, Robotics, Debating and a huge range of sport – and they’ve done so with a great deal of success.
Food and Hospitality students have prepared a range of cultural food for sale while Stage 1 Business Innovation students have worked in groups to prepare, market and sell food whilst learning about the elements of business and enterprise. Such learning has contributed to a positive vibe at lunchtimes.
Students who are interested in making a VET pathway the centrepiece of their SACE in 2022 have been sitting aptitude tests and attending Open Days. A small number of girls on a STEM pathway are currently involved in a program offered by the University of South Australia.
Nineteen of our Year 10 students will also have the opportunity to be involved in a personal leadership program, Youth Opportunities one day per week during Term 4.
TERM 3 REPORTS
Reports will be available on Day Map by the end of today.
For students undertaking South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) studies, grades are assigned according to the performance standards that are stipulated for each individual subject. Copies of these performance standards can be found on the SACE Board website.
For Year 8-10 students, the Australia wide common definitions apply:
A Excellent achievement of what is expected at this year level
B Good achievement of what is expected at this year level
C Satisfactory achievement of what is expected at this year level
D Partial achievement of what is expected at this year level
E Minimal achievement of what is expected at this year level
This summary report is meant to be read in conjunction with the results and comments teachers have put on Day Map as the assessment tasks have been assessed.
When I read reports, I place a lot of emphasis on the ‘Attitude to Learning’ grade. This is a judgement about how hard the student is working on their learning in that particular subject and is given independent of the final achievement grade.
Students inevitably have different abilities, skills and natural aptitudes but there is nothing to stop every one of our students giving of their best and gaining an ‘excellent’ for ‘Attitude to Learning’.
At our assemblies, we award certificates to those students who have gained Excellent ‘Attitude to Learning’ for all or most of their subjects (can have a maximum of two ‘goods’)
PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT INTERVIEWS
Earlier this week you were sent information about our forthcoming interviews – Wednesday, September 22 and Thursday, September 23.
This is a great opportunity to discuss progress with your child’s teachers – whether they are doing really well or whether they are struggling. Experience has shown that when schools and families work together in partnership, great things can happen.
We strongly encourage students to be involved in these conversations – not just as listeners but as active contributors to discussions about their progress and how teachers can work with them to help them to achieve their very best.
The online booking system is quite simple but if you have any difficulties, please contact our reception staff.
STAFFING NEWS:
As we come to the end of the term, we farewell several members of staff:
Ms Kylie Christians has been a member of our middle school leadership team since 2018 and this year was our Head of Middle School. Earlier in the year, Ms Christians was successful in winning a promotion position at Riverbanks College and will take up this role at the beginning of Term 4. Salisbury East High School has definitely benefited from her experience, expertise, care and compassion. She knows all the students in the Middle School and has been a wise mentor to teachers and leaders in her team. Ms Angela Moses will step into the role of Head of Middle School for Term 4 while Ms Christie Lovas will be teaching Ms Christians’ English and HASS class.
Mr John Ly was appointed to our school for just 2021 after a number of years’ experience as a Year 6/7 teacher. He is taking long service leave for Term 4 ahead of commencing at LeFevre High School in 2022. Mr Ly has enjoyed very positive relationships with his students and we wish him well for the future. Ms Kim Nguyen will be teaching Mr Ly’s Maths and Science classes in Term 4.
Ms Tiffany Prouse commences maternity leave at the beginning of Term 4. We wish her the very best as she waits the birth of her second child and look forward to seeing her back at some time in the future. Ms Prouse's Art classes will be taken by a range of other teachers, including Ms Lucy West (returning from maternity leave), Ms Deanna O’Donnell and Ms Chrissy Frahn.

SCHOOL DISMISSAL ON FINAL DAY
School will dismiss at 2.05pm on Friday, September 24. However, students who have not returned their forms granting permission to leave early, will be required to remain at school until 3.05pm.
TERM IV
Term IV resumes on Monday, October 11.

YEAR 7 TO HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE
Year 7 and 8 transition to high school is now in full swing. All student enrolments should be complete and returned to SEHS. Over the last few weeks we have had some primary school students from Madison Park Primary come and experience lunchtime with us, to give students at both the primary school and high school a taste of what it will be like to have Year 7’s here. Primary school students noted how “massive” the school was and high school students definitely noticed how “loud” younger students are, and how much energy they have. Students already on site will notice trials of new systems to facilitate more students next year. This includes a separate middle school and senior school line at the canteen which we trialled in week 9 for a few days. We welcome any feedback around this.
Additionally, in week 9, we start roadshow visits to primary schools where we go and speak to new students about what it will be like to start high school. This will involve some year 8 student leaders coming along to answer questions that our primary school students might have. In week 10 we are also hosting an afternoon tea for our Aboriginal learners to start to make connections at our school with other students and key staff members.
Next term, parents of new students will receive a link to book a 1:1 interview to discuss each student’s learning needs and class placements for 2022. This will come out via email. These interviews give us a great insight into students friendships, learning needs and allow us to create positive connections with families early.

TRANSPORT TRAINING IN SUPPORTED LEARNING CLASSES

This year some of our supported learning class students have learned about road safety and being safe through participating in regular transport training excursions and learning experiences in the community. These experiences aim to develop independence and confidence.
Students have caught public transport to local community hubs, such as Salisbury Library and Twelve Twenty Five Youth Centre, as well as to local shopping centres where they have purchased ingredients for weekly cooking classes. They have also caught public transport into Adelaide to investigate Tandanya and the Art Gallery of South Australia. For some students it has been the first time they have caught public transport without their family.

BUILD-A-BIKE PROGRAM

This year the SEAL classes decided to trial a Build-A-Bike program.
The old bikes, tools and (new) spare parts and accessories were donated to Salisbury East by Workskil and have been a valuable engagement tool for some of the students in SEAL.
The idea now, is to donate the finished bikes to Swallowcliff Primary School, Davoren Park (1 of 3 Category 1 schools in S.A) where they will be most appreciated, as some students there have never had the opportunity to ride a bike, much less own one.
We're also planning to develop the program further next year, where we are looking at making Build-A-Bike into either an Integrated Learning class or done as a Community Studies project.

GSA GROUP

During week 5 Lauren Gillespie from Shine SA came out to meet with some of students in the GSA group. They had the opportunity to ask Lauren any questions and got involved in badge making.
YEAR 11 BUSINESS STUDIES
On Thursday, September 9, the SACE Stage 1 business students ran a range of food stalls for R U Okay day. Students were initially given a loan from HASS for their start-ups, and were all able to breakeven and turn a profit. The students sold a range of foods including Macarons, BBQ, Cookies, Sushi and Frog in a Ponds. Students were able to create $634 of income across the 12 stalls. They will now reinvest their profits into their second iteration of their business. Thank you to everyone who supported students!

STUDENT SUCCESS IN CENTRAL ENSEMBLE

Students who participate in the Salisbury East High School Music program have the opportunity to engage in Department for Education Central Ensembles. These ensembles recognise students who have developed a high level of musical knowledge and instrumental skill. Students are required to audition for ensembles and commit to regular rehearsals, after school hours throughout the year.
Throughout Week 8 a number of Music students were able to celebrate their success in central ensembles through the Primary Schools Festival of Music. Max O'Grady and Emma Newton have performed as members of the Festival of Music Orchestra. As a part of their involvement, Max and Emma have performed most nights this week as a part of the 2021 Festival of Music season, performing to audiences of over 1000 each night. In addition, Corey Schneider and Damon Ashworth performed on Wednesday night as 'Assisting Artists' in the Festival of Music with the South Australian Schools Percussion Ensemble.
Congratulations to these students for the high standard of their performance and for being wonderful ambassadors for Salisbury East High School.
Belinda Parr, Arts Co-ordinator
