COMMUNITY NEWS
STUDENTS TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THEIR LEARNING AT SEHS
In recent weeks, we’ve had several learning programs which have provided our students with the opportunity to demonstrate learner agency.
Learner agency plays a crucial role in shaping well-rounded, confident, and adaptable young people. It boosts engagement, as students feel a greater sense of ownership and investment in their projects. It also enhances their ability to work collaboratively, manage time, and adapt to challenges—capabilities that prepare them for life beyond school.
Organised by our ALT-HUB (Alternative Learning and Transition) students and staff, the inaugural SEHS ‘Show up ‘n’ Shine’ was a great success and generated a lot of community interest. Giving up their Sunday, students demonstrated initiative and ownership throughout the process. They researched event organisation and structure with guidance from industry mentors.
On the day, students managed key roles: working on the gate, marshalling vehicles, judging entries, and even providing a barista service for attendees. These tasks required problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership, showcasing their ability to adapt and manage real-world challenges. By actively engaging in every aspect of the event, students not only honed practical skills but also developed confidence, responsibility, and a sense of achievement, demonstrating the powerful role of learner agency.
Learner Agency was also in evidence during Year 10 Australian Business Week (ABW).
Australian Business Week (ABW) is designed to give students a practical insight into the world of business. Over the course of a week, students work in teams to manage a simulated company, making key decisions in areas like finance, marketing, and production. The program challenges participants to develop and execute business strategies while competing against other teams in a realistic, fast-paced environment.
Through hands-on experiences, ABW helps students build essential skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and communication. The program fosters learner agency by encouraging students to take ownership of their decisions and outcomes, ultimately promoting a deeper understanding of how businesses operate.
It was fabulous to see students ‘step up’, move out of their comfort zone and demonstrate leadership, creativity, critical thinking, and independence.

CONGRATULATIONS, BELINDA PARR - CERTIFIED LEAD TEACHER
It was a privilege to be at the Adelaide Oval recently to see our very own Year 12/SACE Co-ordinator, Belinda Parr, presented with her Lead Teacher certification after a very rigorous assessment process.
A certified Lead Teacher demonstrates advanced teaching expertise and leadership. With deep knowledge of curriculum and pedagogy, they deliver high-quality, student-focused education. Lead Teachers mentor colleagues, fostering growth and collaboration. Through reflective practice, they continually improve methods to enhance student outcomes. Committed to innovation, they also help develop school-wide strategies.
Prior to taking on the role of Year 12/SACE Co-ordinator, Belinda was our Arts Co-ordinator and currently teaches Music and AIF/EIF. She is an enormously hard-working and dedicated professional and it is great to see her expertise acknowledged through this process.

YEAR 10 & 11 VISUAL ART EXCURSION
On the 28th of August, Year 10 and 11 students, accompanied by Mrs Prouse and Mrs Mead, visited both Brent Harris's artwork and the MOD. The students explored Harris's dynamic pieces, engaging in both group and individual activities designed to deepen their understanding of contemporary art.
They participated in written and drawing responses, experimenting with loose drawing techniques such as blind contour and rotating paper to enhance their creative collaboration and personal expression. The excursion offered a valuable hands-on learning experience, allowing students to connect with various artworks and apply new techniques in a supportive, guided environment

MATT GLAETZER VISIT
Our Year 7 and Year 9 students recently had the privilege of hearing from Matthew Glaetzer, a renowned track cyclist who is a former world champion and current Olympic bronze medallist. Matthew shared his inspiring journey, discussing the challenges he faced and the determination it took to achieve his goals.
He started by talking to students about his early love for sports in school, particularly pole vaulting. However, his path was not without obstacles; he endured a three-year break from sports due to injuries like frequent hamstring issues and Osgood Schlatter syndrome. It was during this time that Matthew discovered a new passion. After attempting a triathlon at 16, he found a love for cycling. His rapid improvement in road racing led to his first victory at 17 and eventually to becoming a two-time junior world champion.
Matthew's career quickly took off as he moved into senior competition. He has since earned multiple accolades, including World Championship titles in 2012, 2018, and 2022, and Commonwealth Games Gold Medals in 2014, 2018, and 2022. Competing in four Olympic Games, he won two bronze medals in 2024.
Throughout his talk, Matthew emphasized the importance of resilience and goal-setting. He encouraged students to persevere through setbacks and to keep getting back up after each fall. He also discussed the significance of having a solid plan for achieving goals, which includes training, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and building a support team of coaches, trainers, and family. Matthew stressed that it's crucial to follow your heart when pursuing a career and to be mindful of the impact that challenges can have on both mental and physical health, highlighting the value of a strong support network.
Matthew's story is a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and a clear vision, we can overcome obstacles and achieve our dreams.
SCHOOLS CHALLENGE
On Tuesday 10th December, The Schools’ Challenge performance at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre was the culmination of many months of work - after school, lunchtime and holiday rehearsals.
Our students told a very heartfelt and moving story - resulting in our school being awarded the ‘best storytelling’ award and honourable mention for music and sound (aided no doubt by Scarlett’s gorgeous singing). Kudos to all the students (you were wonderful!) and our amazing and hard-working Performing Arts teacher, Miss Emily Miles.

SINGERS DAY
In week 8, students who participate in vocal lessons (Instrumental Music) took part in 'Singers Day' with rehearsals held at Underdale High School on the Wednesday (11/9/24) and a performance at the Adelaide Festival Centre on Thursday 12th September.
'Singer's Day' is an opportunity for school students studying voice to perform in a choir setting.
The amazing voices from over 40 South Australian schools combined to showcase songs, including Toto's Africa, Higher Ground, Bridge Over Troubled Water and Land Down Under.
Congratulations to all involved! It was so wonderful to see students participate and thrive in the Arts.

ABORIGINAL STEM LEARNERS CONGRESS
In Week 6, ASETO Cliff Walkington and I had the pleasure of taking three of our Aboriginal Learners in Shyan Ward (Year 9), Acacia Coaby (Year 8) and Keerah Hendy (Year 7) to the Aboriginal STEM Learners Congress at the Convention Centre. The day was full of a variety of experiences, including a speech from Kyam Maher, the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs of South Australia, which captivated the audience and left hundreds of young Aboriginal Learners feeling encouraged and motivated to make a difference in their young lives and education journeys.
Students then had the opportunity to tour the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery within the South Australian Museum, learning from Dr. Jared Thomas about the rich history of engineering and inventions made famous by Aboriginal people and cultures - dating back thousands of years.
To finish the day, Aboriginal music group ‘Dem Mob’ performed live to the audience, telling their stories through hip-hop, as well as formulating a song through live producing involving the crowd. Shyan, Acacia and Keerah represented our school with great pride and responsibility, all whilst enriching themselves in a highly educational experience. We are definitely looking forward to attending the Aboriginal STEM Learners Congress in 2025!
