2023 Term 4 Week 2
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Best Wishes to the Class of 2023
For the Year 12 students at our school, Thursday, November 2nd will be the last ‘official’ day of lessons prior to the final examination and assessment period.
For most, their formal educational journey commenced back in 2011 as five year olds at a wide range of schools – both public and private, local and in some cases overseas.
Through their schooling they have been involved in a range of activities including student voice, representative sport, music, debating, excursions, as well as class based learning.
Within the class of 2023 there is a range of abilities, aptitudes and aspirations. Some students have talents in areas demanding advanced literacy skills, a number demonstrate high-level skills in practical subjects while others display aptitudes in mathematics/science. Some students have enjoyed the chance to debate and discuss ideas while others have preferred more skill-based subjects. Some students have worked very hard to get the very most from their ability while others have been less driven and found the going tough – only putting their ‘foot’ down in recent weeks. Put simply, they are a microcosm of our society.
With such diversity, students have taken the opportunity to embark on a variety of pathways during their final years at school.
Some have opted for a vocationally oriented course of study combining general education with a focus on workplace learning.
Conversely, others have opted for subjects that will make them eligible for an Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) and the possibility of acceptance into university.
After beginning school as five year olds, many of our Year 12 leave as adults, having celebrated their 18th birthdays during the year. Most have their licences, many have part-time jobs, some got to vote in the recent referendum while some live independently.
Next year they will go their own way. Some will head to university or TAFE, others will have a ‘gap’ year before resuming study in 2025, some will gain jobs locally while others will move to other places to take up employment or other training.
I’m sure for their families it must seem that it has all happened overnight.
On behalf of the whole school community, I would like to wish the class of 2023 the very best for the forthcoming examinations and also for their future endeavours – wherever that may be. May you have the luck you deserve.
To the families that end their association with our school, I also thank you for your support and contribution over the years.
Minister’s visit to our new buildings
At the invitation of local builder, AUSCO, the Minister of Education, Blair Boyer, along with local member of parliament, Rhiannon Pearce, visited the new buildings last week.
It was timely that the SEAL (alternative learning) Barista class was underway as guests were treated to a range of hot drinks as they learnt about the positive impact of the new buildings on student learning.
In our supported learning classes, the students and staff were keen to speak about their learning and the way that the new space was supporting students’ sense of connection and belonging as well as academic outcomes.
2024 enrolments
We are in the process of ‘firming up’ classes and teachers for 2024. Our staffing is linked to enrolments and thus it is important that we have accurate numbers about who will be attending our school in 2024.
If your child is not going to be attending Salisbury East High School in 2024, please advise us as soon as possible. If you are aware of new enrolments, please also let us know as that information comes to hand.
New uniform options
As advised by email over the holiday break, we have now transitioned to a new uniform supplier, LOWES, who will stock Salisbury East High School uniform items at their Ingle Farm Shopping Centre Store.
While many of the items will remain the same, we are pleased that following consultation with students over recent years, our Governing Council has approved several new options. It’s been great to see a number of students taking advantage of the recent 20% off sale to purchase them.
We understand that all items with the exception of shorts are now available in the store.
Look out for the next 20% off sale.
Recommended Materials and Services Charges for 2024
At our Governing Council meeting on September 12, it was resolved to recommend to the parent community that the Materials and Services Charges remain at $470 for the third year in a row.
Attached are the proposed schedules for Middle School (7, 8 and 9); Senior School (10, 11 and 12) and SEAL.
Should you have any feedback regarding this, you are welcome to attend the Governing Council Meeting on Tuesday, October 31st, commencing at 6.30pm in the Administration area of the school or send an email to dl.1011.info@schools.sa.edu.au, ATTENTION: Chairperson, Betty Wilson.
Student Free Day – Advanced Notice
Term 4 is shaping up to be a very busy term. Please see the full calendar on the final page of this newsletter.
Friday, December 1st is a student free day. Staff will be engaged in professional learning and working in teams to review and update curriculum and assessment tasks.
YEAR 12 IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND DATES
The end of the academic year is in sight for our Year 12 students! They are currently completing courses and, in some cases, preparing to sit exams before concluding their high school journey with various celebration events.
This period often proves to be a very challenging, and sometimes emotional, time for all, as the students strive to achieve their best possible grades, complete their SACE and - for many - pursue a competitive tertiary entrance score (ATAR) for university. It is equally demanding on teachers and parents as we rally round to support their endeavours and help them to transition into future pathways.
At this stage, it is vital that students meet deadlines! Assessment tasks must be given to their teachers in sufficient time for them to be able to mark it, prepare it for submission to the SACE Board, and register results online. All teachers also need to verify that work has been completed by the student i.e. if it is only undertaken at home then it cannot be verified. Therefore, attendance in all classes next week (and beyond if necessary) is crucial.
Students should pay particular attention to detail to ensure they prepare to achieve the best results possible. This is important so they can compete against other students in the state for employment or an ATAR. Productive use of study time at school and undertaking homework will also add a further depth of understanding to assignments; to ensure performance standards are met; and, for those undertaking examinations, to become familiar with exam type questions and responses.
However, while SACE completion is the primary aim for our students, some may need more time or choose to prioritise alternative pathways to achieve their goals. We encourage all students to do their best at school but understand that challenges arise, and plans can change. We will therefore support you and your child to explore other pathways if required, so please do not hesitate to contact subject teachers and/or the Senior School Team if you have any concerns or queries.
Meanwhile, below is a list of several important dates on the school calendar for our Year 12s from Weeks 3 to 6. Further information around this has been (or will be) supplied to the students but please feel free to contact me if you require any clarification.
We wish all our students the very best in the coming weeks!
WEEK 3
Scheduled Lessons
- These continue throughout this week as normal unless students have submitted all assessment tasks at a passing standard for the subject(s). If so, they will be afforded study lines instead. However, please note this is strictly at the discretion of individual subject teachers. Students may also be required to continue attending beyond this week until they have been cleared by their subject teacher as having completed all school-based assessment tasks prior to SACE submission.
All week: Academic Intervention Week
- Students who require extra support to meet passing standards for school-based assessment tasks in subjects will be required to attend supervised sessions in addition to their scheduled lessons. These students will be informed of this compulsory requirement in advance.
Thursday, November 2nd: Leavers/Farewell Assembly (SEHS students and staff only)
- Normal lessons will run until 12.40 p.m. prior to our Year 12 students being invited to a light buffet lunch with staff followed by a whole school farewell assembly in the gym at 1.25 p.m. Students will be dismissed at 2.15 p.m. as normal. Please note this is a formal occasion i.e. ‘muck-up’ activities are NOT permitted. Normal behaviour management processes will be followed and, if required, consequences enacted.
Friday, November 3rd: ‘Day in the Park’ (Year 12 students and staff only)
- A fun celebration/activity day will take place in Carisbrooke Park, Main North Road, Salisbury Park, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a ‘archery tag’ tournament, music, games, photos/videos, and a BBQ. An excursion form/letter with more information will be provided in due course.

- These commence on Monday of Week 4 (November 6th) and finish on Wednesday of Week 5 (November 15th). All last for 2 hours and 10 minutes and take place in the Senior Centre.
- Students have been provided with further details about their exams and all are expected to attend as required. Please contact us immediately should there be any unforeseen circumstances that arise that affect a student’s ability to engage in their exam(s).

2024 YEAR 12 SENIOR JACKETS
Our prospective Year 12 students are reminded that the deadline to order and pay for a 2024 Year 12 Senior Jacket is Friday, November 10th!
The special reversible jacket can be worn throughout the student’s final high school year and costs $125 (inc. GST), payable by credit/bank card directly via the supplier’s website (Reform Clothing). Please note this is not a compulsory uniform item.
The information below was previously provided to all students last term and a letter was given to them to take home. However, to ensure everyone is aware, here is a reminder of the process:
- Go online to shop.reformclothing.com/join/y94965 and create an account using an email address and password of your choosing.
- Enter your first and last name (this is for reference only).
- Enter your size details (click on ‘sizing chart’ for more details; samples were previously supplied to try on before ordering).
- Enter the name that you would like on each side of the jacket (spray side and fleece side). There is a 12-letter limit so this could be either your first name, last name, both (if they fit), or a combination of these.
- Please note: if you enter your name using all capital letters it will be printed on the jacket that way. If you enter their name in lower case letters, it will be printed in lower case.
- Please note that students cannot have a ‘nickname’ on their jacket, and these will not be approved (only shortened or other variations of their actual name are allowed).
- Click ‘add to cart’.
- Click on the ‘trolley’ symbol at the top right of the page to view the cart; check all details thoroughly then click ‘pay now’.
- Enter credit card details and click ‘pay now’.
- Please note: As the garment is completely customised, exchanges or refunds are NOT offered.
Once the order is submitted by SEHS, they will be delivered as early as possible in Term 1, 2024. Students who decide not to order and pay for a jacket by Friday, November 10th, cannot have a jacket manufactured for them for Term 1 next year. Anyone who misses the deadline may be given another opportunity to order in February or March 2024, however this is NOT guaranteed as there needs to be a minimum order of 10. Subsequent delivery of these jackets can then take another 8-12 weeks to be made after that date.
Please do not hesitate to contact me on 8258 2070 if you have any questions about this process or in relation to payments.

BARISTA CHAMPIONSHIPS
One of the highlights of the SEAL Barista program is the Barista Championships! Congratulations to all finalists but a special well done to Adrian who performed consistently well across a range of hot drinks and emerged as the winner of the competition.
LEARNING FOR LIFE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Smith Family is offering our students ‘Learning for Life’ Scholarships.
These are awarded to students in families experiencing financial disadvantage that have demonstrated a commitment to education and who would benefit from additional resources and support. The Smith Family, which is partnered with Salisbury East High School, now has openings for Learning for Life Scholarships for students in Year 7 and 8.
Eligibility includes families having a current Pension Concession or Health Care Card, while students need to demonstrate a strong commitment to education through a minimum 90% school attendance.
Families who meet this criterion are encouraged to speak with our Middle School Wellbeing Coordinator Amelia Molnar - amelia.molnar213@schools.sa.edu.au or 8258 2070.
Please note, however, that meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a scholarship and self-referrals can’t be accepted – they must be at the discretion of, and be submitted by, SEHS.

ARA YOUTH AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
This year we had three students engaged in the Australian Refugee Association (ARA) Youth Ambassador program- Fahari Ruhekenya Matabaro, Mariam Ali Abubakar and Ahadi Matabaro. The ARA Youth Ambassador Programs aim is to empower students to become advocates for positive change in their schools and communities, by promoting understanding of the global refugee experience, the importance of inclusion and the innate value of cultural diversity.
The year-long program supports students and staff to further explore their ideas and experiences around identity, belonging and advocacy for people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Benefits include the opportunity to build friendships and confidence, as well as develop valuable skills like public speaking, creative advocacy and fundraising. Youth Ambassadors receives funding from the Milner Road Foundation.
Our Youth Ambassadors attended events where they gave speeches and performed for other schools in the program including Mark Oliphant College and Craigmore High School and guests including Tony Piccolo and Minister Blair Boyer. This was an opportunity to build community and connection. I am very proud of these students and their achievements this year.

E-SPORTS - FIFA 23 COMPETITION
This year's Electronic-Sports event was a thrilling gathering that brought together 54 students from grades 7 to 12, all vying for the ultimate prize – the coveted bragging rights. The competition showcased the exceptional gaming talent within Salisbury East High School, creating a fascinating lead-up to the climactic final game, complete with unexpected outcomes and dazzling displays of skill from all the participants.
In the grand finale of the knockout competition, two standout players, Roy Brown (Year 12) and Cody Wood (Year 10), battled it out. With a small but captivated audience in attendance, their gameplay delivered an enthralling spectacle, featuring exceptional teamwork that left spectators thoroughly entertained. The opening half witnessed a flurry of goals, with Roy making a scintillating start, firing a shot against the post, and Cody responding with a one-on-one attempt against the goalkeeper both coming up short. Roy's outstanding performance in the first half saw him score four goals from various positions on the field. However, a moment of ambition from Roy, including a daring goalie run, handball, and a penalty, provided Cody with the fuel he needed for a second-half fightback. After numerous opportunities for both players, the final score settled at 6-2, with Roy emerging as the triumphant champion.
Congratulations to Roy Brown for his remarkable FIFA skills, securing his title as the FIFA 23 Champion of Salisbury East High School. Make the most of your well-deserved Rebel Sport Gift Card.

BELIEVE, BELONG AND BLOSSOM
In Term 3 the Abraham Institute came on site to run the BBB program, Believe, Belong and Blossom. The BBB program is a mentoring program for girls from culturally diverse backgrounds in Year 11, which runs over a six week period for a double lesson.
The girls learnt about themselves, gender stereotypes and assumptions, how to navigate the complexities of cultural diversity and what it means to them, how their own thinking can affect them and planning for the future.
The mentors created a safe space for the girls to feel confident to share. By the end of the six weeks the girls expressed feelings of increased confidence and empowerment.
