2023 Term 3 Week 10
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
INCLUSIVE EDUCATION AND WELL-BEING DAY
Last Thursday, students had the opportunity to participate in a range of activities and also connect with a range of external agencies that support inclusion and well-being.
Students came out into the main courtyard area in year groups which gave them the opportunity to learn about the services and supports on offer. At recess and lunchtime there was a carnival atmosphere with activities such as African drumming adding to the ambience.
At lunchtime there was a game of inclusive AFL with students of all ages, genders, sizes, backgrounds and abilities participating. School values were in evidence as players respected the differences and ensured that everyone was able to participate safely.
Well done to all staff involved in the organisation, especially Inclusive Education Co-ordinator, Mr Nathan Pippett, Events SSO, Ms Lauren Pangaro and teacher, Ms Shannon Murphy (AFL game).
AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS WEEK – everyone a winner!
Last week over seventy of our Year 10 students were involved in Australian Business Week, a national enterprise education program.
It was fabulous to observe the high level of energy, engagement and enthusiasm as students focussed on working together as a team to make good ‘business’ decisions, prepare for a trade display, make a video ‘advert’, write a company report and prepare for an oral presentation.
In fact, the whole week’s learning typified what education should be about:
- There was an intellectual rigour as the students came to terms with the concepts that are central to the world of business and enterprise.
- Students had to draw on their higher order thinking skills as they applied and evaluated their learning to create a new business.
- They were required to do be involved in substantial communication through company meetings, preparation of written company reports, the production of a video ‘advert’ and the final oral presentation.
- There were high expectations of all students. They had made a commitment to being involved and success depended on everyone contributing.
- There was strong social support and students felt comfortable taking risks with their learning. ABW took many out of their comfort zone.
- Students were self-directed and self-regulated. They didn’t need a teacher ‘controlling’ them.
- There was a strong sense of engagement. Students were far more than just ‘on task’. There was a real ‘buzz’ as students worked through break times to get the job done.
- There was a strong sense of significance and connectedness to the ‘real world’.
This is the first time our school has been involved in ABW. It is a fabulous programme but also requires considerable organisation at the ground level. Thank you to our local co-ordinator, Ms Shari Bray who brought this to fruition – a terrific week of learning.
SEAL ART EXHIBITION
Now in their new accommodation, our alternative learning students welcomed a range of family members, staff and other students to their annual exhibition.
It was fabulous to see the terrific work on display and to speak to the students about their creative intentions.
MATERIALS AND SERVICES CHARGES FOR 2024
Our Governing Council is recommending that Materials and Services Charges be $470 – exactly the same as 2022 and 2023. A full schedule is attached.
All members of the school parent community are invited to attend the next Governing Council meeting on Tuesday, October 31st to contribute to the discussion re this. Alternatively, you can share your views on this matter by writing to the Chairperson, Ms Betty Wilson (c/ Reception of SEHS).

SCIENCE OLYMPICS
Last Wednesday evening, 20/9, a number of our students competed in the NASSSA first ever Science Olympics. The competition started with a quiz on famous scientists and quotes.
The students then answered questions on all the main branches of science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology and Earth Science).
The evening finished with a building challenge, where students had to make a chair that a toy bear could sit on.
All our students competed incredibly well and got extremely into the 'science spirit.' To top off the end of a very successful Science Olympics, the Senior Team bought home a bronze medal.
Well done to all teams and team members.

HASS GUEST SPEAKER
Several weeks ago, old scholar, Brooke Zarazinski (Class of 2022) came back to SEHS to speak to two of our Year 10 HASS (Tourism) classes about her transition into the tourism industry working with ‘Journey Beyond Rail’ on the Ghan and Indian Pacific. Her presentation was aimed at providing real world contexts for students in how to transition from school to work and how her experience with part-time work equipped her with the skills to be a passenger assistant and tour guide. Brooke spoke about being paid to travel and gave insight into some of her experiences from dinner under the stars in the outback to crocodile boat cruises in Katherine. Our students enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and see what potential careers could be available to them after school.
