Term 4 Week 7
FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
CLASS OF 2022 CELEBRATIONS
Over recent weeks we’ve celebrated with our Year 12 students in several contexts as their secondary school days have come to an end.
On Friday, November 18, our Year 12s and teachers enjoyed a wonderful night of high glamour, good food, friendship, gentle humour and dancing at the Senior Formal held at the InterContinental Ballroom in the city.
Students looked wonderful in their suits and fine dresses and conducted themselves exceedingly well during the evening. It was a great opportunity to relax with each other and to re-connect with staff after a period of high intensity with final exams and assessments in the weeks previous.
Several days later on Wednesday, November 23, Year 12s and their family and friends gathered at the Golden Grove Arts Centre for the Year 12 Awards and Graduation Evening.
It was a fabulous opportunity to celebrate the achievements of all students as well as present a range of subject and special awards.
It was super exciting to welcome back Warrant Officer, Marc Henderson, a former Salisbury East High School student, who flew over from Canberra to present the Australian Defence Force Awards.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY
Coming up on Wednesday, December 14, is the Middle School Celebration Assembly which will be held in the gymnasium at 1.50 pm.
We will be presenting a range of awards to students in Year 7, 8 and 9 – including Academic Excellence, Service to Community, Overall Improvement and Commitment to School Values. Additionally, we will be recognising our Year 9 students as they transition to the senior school.
We will be contacting families of award winners and inviting them to the special celebration.
CHANGES TO MOBILE PHONE POLICY
The state government has committed to banning student access to mobile phones at school across all year levels.
This will ensure we help promote:
- safe environments with reduced negative impacts of inappropriate use of devices at school, such as cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, and critical incidents that involve mobile phones
- classroom environments where teachers can teach and students can learn free from distractions caused by personal use of devices
- use of breaks as quality time away from screens, encouraging physical activity and play and meaningful face-to-face connections with peers.
Under the incoming policy updates, all students must keep their mobile phones and other personal devices off and away at school, unless granted an exemption by their school under the department’s policy. This also applies on school activities such as camps and excursions.
There will be no change to the existing provisions for schools to approve exemptions in exceptional circumstances including but not limited to:
- monitoring or managing a medical condition
- as an agreed adjustment for a student with disability or learning difficulties
- translation for students with English as an additional language or dialect
- where the student has personal circumstances requiring more ready access to their phone (such as where they are a primary carer for their own child or another family member).
Once the new policy is finalised there will be a transition period to allow schools sufficient time to locally implement the new policy. All government schools need to be using the new policy on or before the first day of term 3, 2023.
More information will be communicated ahead of the beginning of the school year.
RETURNING LOAN LAPTOPS
For families who have had access to a loan laptop this year, it is crucial that it be returned prior to the end of the school year.
Over the holiday period, the laptops are ‘serviced’ by our IT staff and are thus ready to be loaned out at the beginning of the year.
In the weeks to come we will be contacting families to remind them of the obligation to return the laptops. If they are not returned, then families will be invoiced for a replacement laptop.
END OF TERM REPORTS
All Year 7-11 students will be issued with electronic reports via Day Map on the final day of the term – Friday, December 16.
For students undertaking South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) studies , grades are assigned according to the performance standards that are stipulated for each individual subject. Copies of these performance standards can be found on the SACE Board website.
For Year 7-10 students, the Australia wide common definitions apply:
A Excellent achievement of what is expected at this year level
B Good achievement of what is expected at this year level
C Satisfactory achievement of what is expected at this year level
D Partial achievement of what is expected at this year level
E Minimal achievement of what is expected at this year level
This summary report is meant to be read in conjunction with the results and comments teachers have put on Day Map as the assessment items have been assessed.
Teachers are required to:
- Report the achievement level on DayMap for each summative assessment task across the term.
- Ensure that there is at least one substantial comment provided throughout the term identifying strengths and areas for improvement
- Ensure that results are published within three weeks of submission
- Provide a checkpoint comment for large assessment tasks that go over a term (eg making a cabinet in Design and Technology).
When I read reports, I place a lot of emphasis on the Attitude to Learning grade. This is a judgement about how hard the student is working on their learning in that particular subject and is given independent of the final achievement grade.
Students inevitably have different abilities, skills and natural aptitudes but there is nothing to stop every one of our students giving of their best and gaining an ‘excellent’ for Attitude for Learning.
This term I will be reading and adding an individualised comment to all Year 9, 10, 11 and SEAL reports.

STUDENT VOICE UPDATE
As Student Voice winds down for the year, with our senior leaders finishing school, our middle school students have stepped up to run and organise events for the school. Students have recently organised activities for mentor classes for White Ribbon Day, including making approximately 500 ribbons for students to wear throughout the day. The day raises awareness for those experiencing domestic violence and highlights the need to strive for gender equality.
Fatemah Jafari and Jasmine Tiplady recently attended the Public Education Schools Forum at the Adelaide Convention Centre. This day was designed to give feedback directly to the Chief Executive of Education about the vision for public schools moving forward. Both Jasmine and Fatemah were fantastic representatives for our school, speaking with students much older and younger than them from all over South Australia on the day.
Finally, appointments of school captains for 2023 have now been finalised. Students completed an application form, and sat a round table interview with our principal, Ms Masters and our 2022 School Captains. It gives me great please sure to announce Vicky Kim and Astro Rolfe as school captains for 2023, supported by Ashlee Grobler and Rhys Aplosen as Deputy Captains. Competition was strong for these positions, and we look forward to a strong senior leadership team in Student Voice in 2023.

CONGRATULATIONS
Emily Hart was recently a finalist for the 2022 INDAILY EMERGING ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD at the recent Rebel SA Sport Awards . She was recognised as one of three emerging young athletes for her outstanding achievements and national selection in Tenpin Bowling. Congratulations to Emily, we wish you all the best for the upcoming year.
Two of our students saddled up to represent SEHS for the first-ever time at an inter-school equestrian event … and cantered to an incredible sixth place overall!
Talented horse riders Lily Daw (Year 7) and Jess Crisp-Trowbridge (Year 11) took part in the Clare High School Gymkhana on November 24th.
And, in a field of 29 schools, some represented by more than 20 competitors, our duo was in scintillating form at the Clare Showgrounds to claim the stunning finish.
Sitting on top of bespoke SEHS saddles throughout the event, Lily and Jess have done us very proud indeed … and possibly started a brand new sporting tradition for our school at the same time. Congratulations girls!
